2020 Notice of Election for
Systemwide Executive Board Officers
Members of UPTE-CWA 9119:
The UPTE-CWA 9119 Election Committee has ruled to overturn the tentative certification of the results of the UPTE-CWA 9119 2020 Officers election. This is due to the Election Committee’s discovery, after the tentative certification was released in December, that an incorrect voter eligibility list was sent to the electronic voting vendor, Survey and Ballot Systems (SBS). This was an accident and not an attempt to influence the election by any candidate, member, non-member, UPTE staff, or member of the Election Committee. We apologize for the error and have learned important lessons that should help us reduce the chances of similar mistakes in the future.
Upon discovery of the error, the Election Committee reviewed the list of people who cast ballots and discovered that ineligible voters cast ballots in the election. Based solely on the margins for each officer election, the number of ineligible voters is sufficient to have affected the outcome of several of the races. In addition, the number of unexercised ballots in each race is greater than the total number of ineligible votes in the election. This makes it impossible to determine how each race could have been affected by these votes in a way that would allow us to remove ballots from the election without removing those cast by eligible voters.
Therefore, the Election Committee has ruled the tentative certification must be overturned and, with no viable path to final certification, that all races in the election be rerun. The specific dates and conditions of the rerun will be announced once it is scheduled. We expect this will be sometime in late February or early March.
UPTE-CWA 9119 2020 Election Committee:
William Rowley, Chair
