UC negotiators’ Last, Best and Final Offer of 12% over 5 years* for Research (RX) and Technical (TX) workers was not only far from fair and equitable – it was contingent on giving up on key demands developed by UPTE members:
- Annual steps: Step increases of at least 2% per year to recognize and reward career development
- Daily overtime: Overtime pay after 8 hours in a day, in line with California private sector
- Secure retirement: Stop the 401k opt-out, no new pension tier
- Protections for Career Positions: Limits on abuse of part-time work, improved conversion from part-time to full time
Not only did UC negotiators acknowledge at Fact Finding that they can afford to give us what we deserve, they’ve already given nurses a contract with steps, improved job security, and a secure pension.
We know that when we stand together, we have the power to win — not just for ourselves, but for our families, students, patients, and the public. We have to show UC that we understand what is at stake and that stalling won’t work. UPTE members came out to support other UC workers in 2018 — now we must be prepared for UC’s illegal imposition and to strike in our largest numbers yet for our RX/TX contract demands.
*UC’s communications have been inaccurate, implying that they are offering up to 18% raises through October 2023 when they had in-fact proposed an expiration date of September 30, 2022 and 3% raises in April 2019, October 2019, October 2020, and October 2021.
