Protect Our Pension: Send this to President Yudof and
the UC Board of Regents

To President Yudof and the UC Board of Regents, I am opposed to your proposals to: -Create a second tier pension plan where new hires will pay more for a lesser benefit. This is divisive and unfair. UC´s pension is one of the main reasons quality staff stay at UC. -Change eligibility for full retirement benefits from age 60 to 65. -Dramatically reduce UC´s contribution to retirees´ health benefits. These draconian cuts are not required, and some of them, in fact, hurt the pension fund in the short and medium-run. Minor changes can be made to the post-retirement benefits that would put our pension fund on secure footing. Most importantly, UC needs to make a commitment to preserve its contribution to the pension fund for new hires. Finally, I oppose the increase to student fees. There just has to be a way to deal with state budget cuts that do not make UC inaccessible for many of the brightest Californians, especially those from underrepresented communities. I urge you to talk with our unions and student organizations to work out a plan that preserves quality education, research and public service at UC.
