1. Major UPTE Victory: Governor Signs AB 848 to Stop Off-shoring of UC and CSU Jobs

After UC San Francisco laid off nearly 100 IT workers and then forced them to retrain their replacements from India, UPTE activists mobilized to stop the practice from spreading. The contract that UC signed with HCL (a multi-billion company based in India) could be expanded to other campuses. Union members and supporters visited Sacramento to testify to legislators, sent countless letters, and rallied to push for the passage of AB 848. We succeeded!

We give thanks to Assembly member Kevin McCarty who carried our bill.

2. UC Contract Action Heats Up For Halloween

Our health care professionals (HX) contract expires on Halloween, and our technical and researcher (TX/RX) contracts expired last month. Nevertheless, UC continues to insist on completely unacceptable raises that exclude either  cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) or step increases. UC management also continues to insist that we allow Wall Street to undermine our pension fund.

So it’s time to step up our actions. We had a great turnout and excellent presentations at Town Halls across the state earlier this month. Many of us joined AFSCME on informational picket lines across the state last week.

Next, we will be “trick or treating” on Halloween at all campuses. Look for notices about details for your campus. We will call on our union partners to join us in Halloween fun and protest.
All bargaining updates are posted on the UPTE website.

3. Help Union Members Affected By Wildfires

Our national union, the Communications Workers of America, has set up a relief fund for union members who have been affected by the wildfires in Northern California. UPTE will be contributing to the fund and we encourage individuals to also make donations.

If you or any other UPTE member you know has been affected by the fire, please contact UPTE President Jelger Kalmijn or Treasurer Shanna Vela.

4. College of the Sequoias Adjunct Faculty Win 4% Raise

The UPTE adjunct faculty bargaining unit at College of the Sequoias ratified a wage deal that gives all members raises, and which bring wages closer to market pay. The deal also includes more money for professional development and office hours.

Membership levels have nearly tripled at the College of the Sequoias. The growing membership and active leadership have succeeded in making real progress. Over the last two years, we have won 10% in pay increases!
