(1) UC Wants Multi-year Funding Compact: We Want Staff Raises Included

Both UC and the Governor's Department of Finance have stated to UPTE legislative activists that they are crafting a new multi-year UC funding “compact” for the remaining three years of the Schwarzenegger administration. The big question for us is: Will it include our wages? If UC and the governor have their way the answer is “no.”

UPTE members all over the state will be visiting legislators on the budget committees that approve the UC budget and pushing that the only funding stability that makes sense must include funds for our raises for all three years. You are welcome to come visit a legislator with us, please let us know if you are interested.

UPTE members are collecting legislative petition cards. They will be delivered personally to the governor and the leaders of the State Assembly and State Senate. Get a card from your UPTE representative. The cards will be delivered on May 13. If you are interested in delivering our message and the cards personally, let us know.

For more information on UPTE's legislative plan for raises see the newly revised web page: www.upte-cwa.org/lp/

(2) RX Open-Range Employees Get Raise as They Convert to Steps
The 2003 RX contract moves all open-range merit employees on to steps effective July 1, 2004 . All employees will be moved up to the next highest step which means that you will get a between 0% and 2% raise in your August 1 paycheck. This applies to you if you are a SRA II, SRA III, SRA IV, Museum Scientist, Sr. Museum Scientist or Spectroscopist. The new rates are on the UPTE website at http://www.upte-cwa.org/RXnewrates.htm.

(3) TX Open-Range Employees Get Raise as They Convert to Steps
The 2003 TX contract moves all open-range merit employees on to steps effective July 1, 2004 . All employees will be moved up to the next highest step which means that you will get a between 0% and 2% raise in your August 1 paycheck. This applies to you if you are a Principal Computer Operator, Sr. Artist, Art Model, Translator/Interpreter for the Deaf, CART Captionist, Television Engineer, Communications Officer, Animal Health Tech IV, Animal Health Tech III, or Diving Officer. The new rates are on the UPTE website at http://www.upte-cwa.orgTXnewrates.htm.

(4) UC Performing Benefits Dependent Audit
An UPTE member has reported receiving a letter from UC Office of the President to verify her dependent's eligibility for benefits. UC threatens in the letter to retroactively take away benefits to January 1, 2003 if you do not respond by the end of April. If you get such a letter, we strongly recommend you respond immediately. If you have problems or questions, please contact UPTE. While we sympathize with UC's need to control health care costs, such draconian mandates are not necessary.

(5) UPTE Reorganization: Members First
We invite all members to participate in a dialogue to refocus UPTE's activities and education to member activists. All activities from our publications, contract campaigns, stewards and much more need to be carried out and run by our member activists. A rough draft of the plan that campus locals and our systemwide union local are discussing is available on our website. If you have ideas or input, please go to your local membership meetings or send them in by email.

The UPTE E-Bulletin is prepared by UPTE-CWA President Jelger Kalmijn for all members.
If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to write him at president@upte-cwa.org. If you wish to have dialogue with other members about UPTE-CWA issues, sign up for our web forum.
