(1) Join On-Line Protest Of Unfair Choice: Lose Your Doctor or Pay Much More!
Many UC employees currently on Health Net coverage will see their premiums increase in January by more than $100/month. If your physicians are not in the new Health Net Blue and Gold, you will either have to pay or change your provider. For some regions there aren’t even any physicians or hospitals close by that are part of the Blue and Gold plan. The Blue Cross Plus plan is also dramatically increasing in cost, and highly-paid UC employees aren’t being hit with as big a percentage increase as lower-paid employees.

Take action by giving us your story about how these changes will affect you and your family. You can also send a protest letter to Dwaine Duckett who heads up Human Resources at UC’s Office of the President in Oakland. Go to the UPTE health care benefits action website now!

UPTE has demanded to bargain the proposed increases in health care premiums for tech and researcher (TX/RX) employees. Our contract guarantees that we can negotiate any premiums increases that exceed 18% over three years for Health Net and Kaiser for the lowest pay band. We will be electing a bargaining team and discussing additional actions at bargaining conference in Los Angeles November 6. You are encouraged to attend your local or the systemwide bargaining conference.

(2) HX Ratification This Week
All HX members will vote on the results of our wage and benefits re-opener negotiations this week. Find a polling station that works for you, or request an on-line absentee vote.

Get your co-workers to vote. Non-members can join at the polling locations and then cast their ballots.

(3) UPTE Annual Convention: Protecting Pensions and Organizing Administrative Professionals Are Top Priorities
UPTE delegates from across the state voted to make protecting our pensions and building a union for administrative professionals our priorities for the coming year. An updated version of a power point presentation on post-employment benefits helped delegates understand our challenges and develop an action plan.

Attendees also heard a compelling presentation on the corporatization of UC by Jennifer Washburn, who authored University Inc. and just released a major study entitle Big Oil Goes to College.

We want to hear your input. Participate in the UPTE member forum for more dialogue on UPTE issues. For more news, subscribe to UPTE’s Monday Memo.
