UPTE-CWA E-Bulletin: March 15, 2011
Introductory Comment: We are fighting back to strengthen the voice of working people. We will work together from email pickets to walk-outs to defend our union rights for decent wages and to save our pension. There will be many calls for participation in the coming months. Now is the time to step up because the die will be cast for the coming decades. We have the power to prevail!

(1) Take Action To Reject Confirmation of David Crane as Regent: He Opposes Unions for Public Sector Employees
In his last days in office Schwarznegger appointed David Crane to the UC Board of Regents. David Crane wants to do what Governor Scott Walker is doing in Wisconsin: take away collective bargaining rights for public employees, get rid of pension plans and even eliminate the minimum wage. This is not the kind of person who will promote excellence and accessibility at the University of California--he would be a disservice.

The California State Senate can end his tenure as a Regent immediately by holding a confirmation hearing and voting him down. Join us to call on the Senate Rules Committee to hold a hearing and rid of David Crane. Go to the e-action webpage and send the template letter or one of your own right-away.

On another union-busting front, anti-union corporate interests have begun to circulate a petition deceptively called “Save our Secret Ballot.” We encourage you to not sign it, as it will eliminate the right of workers to select a union away from the coercive pressures of their boss.

(2) Demonstrations To Defend Our Pensions: March 16
As part of the widening outcry supporting public education and public services, UPTE-CWA and other unions have endorsed a nationwide day of action. Please check our website for an action close to you and show your support. Our future as well as that of our children depends on it.

(3) Tell An AP Near You About the Raises and Protections UPTE has Won
At UC we used to assume we would always have good benefits and modest raises. Now we know that from UC to Wisconsin, the only tool workers have to preserve the quality of jobs is a union contract. The 16,000 administrative professionals have no raises and no protection.

Let’s help them win a voice. Talk to a programmer analyst, administrative analyst, student affairs officer near you about joining the drive for unionization with UPTE. Our website has all the details.

The UPTE E-Bulletin is prepared by UPTE-CWA President Jelger Kalmijn. If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to write him at president@upte-cwa.org.
