(1) Monday, April 4, Day of Action: Defend Our Benefits and Defend Our Unions
“The labor movement was the principal force that transformed misery and despair into hope and progress,” -Martin Luther King.

On Monday, April 4, working people, NAACP, and hundreds of other progressive organizations are standing up to attacks on public employees and union rights. Join in your local UPTE action. UPTE has t-shirts, ribbons, balloons and posters that we will display at events and in our work places.

From Wisconsin and Ohio to California, our legal rights are threatened and if we sit idly by we will not only lose our pensions and job security, but our unions themselves. On April 4 we commemorate not only the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who was shot on that date supporting Tennessee public workers, but also our value as public employees providing critical services for all.

(2) UPTE Website Goes Multi-Lingual
You can now read our website in nearly any language you like by going to the “select language” button at the bottom of the page. We have many members for whom English is not a first language. Hopefully this new feature on the website will help make important information more available to everyone.

(3) Take Action To Remove David Crane as a Regent
If you have not already done so, send a letter to the California State Senate Rules Committee to reject David Crane as a UC Regent. Crane opposes defined benefit plans (pensions) as well as unions. He was a last minute political appointment by Governor Schwarzenegger that the Senate Rules Committee has the power to reject. They need to hear from us.

We want to hear your input. Participate in the UPTE member forum for more dialogue on UPTE issues.

The UPTE E-Bulletin is prepared by UPTE-CWA President Jelger Kalmijn. If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to write him at president@upte-cwa.org.
