(1) HX: Holding Out For Fair Retirement – Come Out On May 1
On May 1, our HX members will march to the UC medical center CEOs with a cookie crumb delivery, making clear their demand for a fair contract instead of just “the crumbs.” The 5 CEOs themselves have personally received massive raises–from 21% to 67%–as the medical centers have made massive profits. Still, UC is trying to withhold modest increases for HX workers to force massive retirement cuts. That’s unfair and May 1, International Labor Day, we should all join HX members as they help defend fair pensions for all of us.

AFSCME workers will be joining us as they commence bargaining for their new contract as well. They face the same demand from UC for massive retirement concessions.

Go to UPTE’s HX website to find the times and locations of the May 1 events!

(2) Compromise Tax Ballot Initiative: We Can Win!
The governor and proponents of the Millionaire’s Tax have negotiated a compromise tax initiative that can save the state’s education and public services from another round of massive budget cuts.

The new initiative, called Protect Our Schools and Public Safety, raises taxes for those making more than $250,000 as well as implements a ¼ percent sales tax increase. All of us working together must collect the required nearly 1 million signatures by early June for this initiative to make it on the November ballot.

Please go to the initiative’s website and print out the petition. Carefully follow all the instructions. You can hand your petitions into UPTE and we will send them to the campaign office.  You can also circulate the petition on Facebook and Twitter by using the convenient links here.

(3) TX/RX: $100 In Your June Check
The side-letter agreement on pensions and pay that UPTE bargainers agreed to earlier this year provides for a $100 offset for pension contributions that we are making. The lump sum will be included in a check around June 1.

(4) AT&T: Shameless Making Money Off Workers
Despite $31 billion in profits for the last two years, AT&T wants to drive their employees into poverty. They want to impose huge cost shifting and cuts for health benefits and pensions so that they can make billions more in profit. How can we rebuild our economy if profitable companies won’t pay workers living wages and provide health care? For 50,000 CWA-represented phone company workers, it is a struggle about the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’. Sign up to encourage AT&T to take the high road and show your support.

We want to hear your input. Participate in the UPTE member forum for more dialogue on UPTE issues.
