(1) Prioritize Education: Take Action Today To Impact State Budget
The legislature is finalizing the budget with Governor Brown right now and yet more student fee increases and cuts to financial aid are on the chopping block. Help keep UC affordable for working people like us so that we can afford to send our kids here. Send an email right now!

(2) Dependent Verification for Benefits
A few months ago, UC began an effort to verify all dependents of employees who are on benefit plans. Now, the university has sent letters threatening to de-enroll family members as well as current employees if they do not adequately respond to the request for information about the eligibility of dependents.

UPTE-CWA encourages all employees to provide the requested information. At the same time we have protested the threat to de-enroll employees. If UC actually did this, it would be a violation of our contract which guarantees all career employees benefits. UPTE-CWA will receive a notice from UC for any employee or dependent they intend to involuntarily de-enroll. We will provide information and support to anyone who believes UC actions are inappropriate.

(3) Switch to Bi-Weekly Pay At UCLA, Merced And Office of the President
Hourly employees will be switched from monthly pay to bi-weekly pay in July. UPTE-CWA negotiated a transition program that provides for loans and vacation cash out to make up for the 10 day delay in pay. For more detailed information and the text of the actual agreement, check UPTE’s website. This change will also occur at all the other UC campuses over the next couple years.

(4) Pension Contributions
All UPTE-represented employees except health care professionals (HX) will begin paying an additional 1.5% to the pension plan on July 1 (in your August 1 paycheck). UC continues to hold HX wages hostage, and in return we have not agreed to the extra pension contribution. Employees in the TX and RX units will receive a 3% raise on October 1 and about a 2% step increase January 1, 2013. UC will increase its pension contribution by a 3%.

UC wants an additional 1.5% starting July 1, 2013 along with the creation of a second tier for new employees. UPTE-CWA will bargain these changes and will seek to avoid dividing employees into different retirement tiers as well as demanding raises to offset increased pension contributions.

(5) Part-Time Faculty Join UPTE-CWA
More than 1000 part-time faculty from Butte Community College, College of the Sequoias and
Mt. San Jacinto Community College have voted to join UPTE-CWA. They were previously part of another CWA local and have some of the best contracts in the state for part-time faculty.

These new members will bring greater depth and diversity to UPTE. They face many challenges as the state budget cuts have severely affected the community colleges. Two of the three colleges cut summer classes altogether. Fees have increased from nearly free to hundreds of dollars per class, even though most of the students served are among the poorest in the state.

We want to hear your input. Participate in the UPTE member forum for more dialogue on UPTE issues.
