Strike UPTE-CWA E-Bulletin: AFSCME Rocks With UPTE-CWA Support
May 22, 2013
What an amazing strike! For the first time ever, the UC medical centers were brought to a standstill except for essential services. Congratulations to all, and especially to our sisters and brothers in AFSCME who turned out in huge numbers.

UPTE-CWA’s health care professionals walked side by side with them on each and every picket line, as did many of our researchers, techs and administrative professional members. The action was extremely effective at getting UC’s attention, as well as the media’s, from the San Francisco Chronicle, to Reuters News Service, the Bay Guardian and the UCSD Guardian.

And this is just the beginning. AFSCME-represented service workers, UPTE-represented techs and researchers, CNA-represented nurses, and the UAW-represented graduate student instructors all have contracts expiring by September 30. We’re likely to see one strike after another by UC employees willing to stand up for their rights, until management decides to bargain a fair contract for us all.

Now UC management knows it will have to seriously deal with our demand for no two-tier pension and retiree health benefits. UC must agree to wage increases that at least keep up with inflation. Quality patient care requires that workers be supported and treated with respect, and that staffing levels be maintained.

The medical centers made $500 million in profit last year. UC has 5 years of increases in state funding. There is no reason whatsoever for workers to forfeit the retirement benefits that our predecessors won for us, and we have a duty to protect them for the coworkers who will come
after us.

Check out the pictures on the UPTE-CWA website. And take a moment to stand with AFSCME workers by signing this petition to UC if you haven’t yet done so.

The UPTE E-Bulletin is prepared by UPTE-CWA President Jelger Kalmijn. If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to write him at
