AFSCME Calls Strike: Support Service And Patient Care Technical Workers
AFSCME has called a strike for Wednesday, November 20, 2013, to protest the bullying tactics that the University has used, including unlawful coercion and threats against workers before and during the strike last May.  The nurses in CNA have given notice that they will strike in sympathy with AFSCME.

UPTE-CWA supports patient care technical and service workers in their fight for justice, and we encourage UC President Janet Napolitano to distance her administration from the anti-worker, union-busting policies of her predecessor.

However, UPTE is not calling for a strike at this time. Rather, in exchange for UC not imposing horrible wage and retirement conditions on our health care professional (HX) members, UPTE-CWA has committed to not strike as long as productive dialogue continues with UC.

In contrast, President Napolitano’s predecessor already imposed the two-tier retirement and next to no wage increases on AFSCME-represented patient care technical and service workers, leaving Napolitano and AFSCME with diminished opportunity for a similar no-imposition/no-strike tradeoff.  Service and patient care technical workers are among the lowest paid at UC and have been disastrously impacted by the increased pension and benefit costs.

We call on all UPTE-CWA members to support the AFSCME strike action at lunch time as well as before and after work. UPTE will put out educational material as well as support stickers to wear in the work place. UPTE-CWA workers should do all they can to not take up work idled by striking AFSCME or CNA members.

UPTE-CWA members have not had the same regressive package of wages and work conditions imposed as AFSCME members, and we remain hopeful that a dialogue scheduled with President Napolitano later this week and subsequent bargaining can lead to a contract with fair raises and retirement security.
