Join Us in Sacramento to Advocate for Re-Funding Higher Education
UPTE-CWA has contributed to building a historic coalition of unions, faculty and students with the mission of making higher education funding a state priority. On March 5, we will come together in Sacramento to deliver our message to lawmakers. From UPTE members, we need the stories of dedicated UC staff, parents of UC students and alumni who benefit from UC to give a personal face to the education dividend. That means you!

Sign up on-line to join the coalition Lobby Day

Bring your enthusiasm and conviction that prioritizing higher education funding provides the economic and social engine that makes California great. We will brief you on the issues and give you training on how to talk with legislators and their staff.

There are also community college-focused Lobby Days where UPTE-represented adjunct faculty members will advocate for paid office hours. See this separate community college on-line sign up page for these events. Let’s start the ball rolling to achieve the free community college promise President Obama made in his state of the union address!

Early Retirement Incentive at UC?

UC Berkeley has announced an early retirement incentive that equals the severance pay that UPTE won in previous contracts. The program gives one week of pay for each year of service up, to a maximum of 16 weeks of salary. In the announcement made at the Berkeley campus, approval of the voluntary separation package is subject to department approval.

UPTE-CWA will encourage the University of California to expand the incentive to all campuses and all employees. While this incentive does not compare favorably to previous early retirement offers, it may work well for some members. We will report the outcome of our discussions with UC.

Defeat the Trans-Pacific Partnership
We have the biggest of trade/job give-away treaties on the ropes. An unlikely coalition from the left and right oppose giving President Obama fast-track authority for the Trans-Pacific Partnership (or TPP). If the treaty is negotiated and debated in public, its details will appall the public and will likely kill the deal.

Email your legislator through the CWA TPP action page. Tell them to vote against fast-track authority for TPP.
