(1) Sign the letter to Governor Brown for Adjunct Faculty Job Security

Tell Governor Brown to sign a bill to provide adjunct faculty basic job security. Many of these faculty have less job security than fast food workers. They have no guarantee of work from semester to semester and must collect unemployment between semesters.

We guided AB 1690 through the legislature and it now awaits the governor’s signature. Student success depends on having quality faculty. When faculty have no job security, they leave at alarming rates in search of better employment. Millions of students, disproportionately economically disadvantaged, depend on community colleges to provide them with opportunities for a better future.

UPTE-represented faculty members at community colleges and their students can’t wait. Tell Governor Brown to sign AB 1690.

(2) UC Retiree Health Benefit Survey – Last Chance!
For UPTE members at UC, we need your input on keeping quality retiree health benefits affordable. If you have not yet participated in our retiree health benefits survey, please do so now. The survey ends on this Wednesday.

(3) UC Health Benefits in 2017
UPTE and other unions met with UC for an initial briefing on the benefits plans for next year.

UC plans to make significant changes to our supplemental disability insurance. The current four levels of waiting periods will be condensed into one waiting period of 14 days. The benefit will also be reduced from 70% of pay to 60%, a significant cut.

Most of us have a waiting period of 30 days – which makes more a more affordable premium -- because employees are forced to use a month of accrued sick leave before using the disability benefit anyway. Under the new plan, the cost will increase by $9/month if you currently have a 30-day waiting period.

You can read UC’s presentation with additional details on the UPTE website.

Additionally, UC retirees who already carry the nearly the entire burden of vision care will see their premiums increase by $5/month.
