Help Local 1 win back jobs and benefits

The problem:
Last year, five UPTE-represented, longtime workers at Cal Performances (stage crew and computer tech) were laid off. At the same time, a new director, Matias Tarnopolsky, was hired at a base salary of $240,000, 35% more ($62,000) than the base salary of his predecessor at the end of his career. Since then, the computer tech job was reopened as the exact same job, but as a nonunion position, and the remaining stage crew's hours and wages were reduced for three months.

no layoffs
These laid-off workers no longer have job security or health benefits, but some of them are still asked to help with shows as casual workers. After 6 months of ignoring Local 1’s requests, the director has agreed to meet with UPTE because of support from Cal Performances patrons and performers. Help is needed to pressure the director to rehire these people, with benefits, and to not lay off any more workers.

Please help get these UC jobs back!

Please call or email Cal Performances director Matias Tarnopolosky (510/643-6716, mtarnopolsky@calperfs.berkeley.edu) Monday or Tuesday (April 26 and 27) before 5 pm and ask him to immediately rehire these employees with guaranteed hours and health benefits. If you can't get through, leave a message at the administrative office 510-642-0212. Last week’s patrons of the Sweet Honey in the Rock, Arlo Guthrie and Pat Metheny shows will be calling too. Local 1 officers are scheduled to meet with him on Tuesday.
