RX/TX Bargaining Report #6
UC Santa Barbara (March 6-8, 2013)

More negotiations for the TX and RX units took place at UC Santa Barbara from March 6-8. UPTE continued to give UC several proposals as we have during each round of bargaining. Our proposals have included Training and Development, Leaves for Union Business and Uniforms. The university's chief bargainer continued to try to rush the UPTE bargaining team to make their proposals.  This included 20 minutes of wasted time we could have spend actually making proposals.  When she attempted to pull the same stunt the next day, the team walked out.  We will not submit contract language that is not in the best interests of our members or have UC dictate to us what we will propose and when.

Several members came to the open session on March 7 and a few chose to speak to the university's representatives.  The main concerns expressed were in regards to the life safety systems (fire alarms, etc.) at the university.  The members who spoke discussed how management didn't always follow the proper guidelines for emergency maintenance on the life safety systems panels during non-business hours thus putting students and staff at risk of being harmed or worse.  This appears to primarily be done as a cost-saving measure. Our members expressed grave misgivings about management putting money before the university's workers and the students they serve.

Our next bargaining sessions will be in Santa Cruz from March 20-22, 2013.  As always, members are encouraged to come observe the process or make a presentation.  If you have any questions about the process or coming to a bargaining session feel free to contact our chief bargainer or your campus bargaining team member(s).

We want to encourage all UPTE members to come out for the April 4th Day of Action.  Good contracts are really won in the workplace and not at the bargaining table. Go to the UPTE website for locations and times and click on the “Yes, I’ll be there” link to RSVP.
