July UPTE Update: Officer Election, Climate Change Survey, Convention & More

UPTE Officers Statement on Election

We are proud to have been re-elected with an even stronger mandate to continue the work of making UPTE a stronger, more democratic, and effective Union.

We thank everyone who participated in the election and those who continue to work every day to build power with their co-workers by standing together to address issues at work.

Special thanks to the hundreds of members who have stepped up to act as Unit or Workplace representatives, helping us understand what our members – and future members – want to work together to accomplish as a Union.

Thanks to all of you, we continue to win important victories for departments and job titles across the state at UC, as well as recently pressing MSJC management to double their wage offer.

These campaigns are how we will continue to build our power to win even more when we return to bargaining in 2024 and to work together with other Unions to make change in our communities.

In Solidarity,

Dan, Ursula, Matias, Carole, and Matt

Welcome UC Optometrists!

The Public Employment Relations Board has officially made UC Optometrists part of UPTE’s Healthcare (HX) Unit. They will now enjoy the benefits of the UPTE contract: regular raises, improved job security, and the same retirement benefits 5 years earlier than non-Union employees.

UC Optometrists are tens of thousands of dollars behind their colleagues at peer institutions such as Kaiser, which UPTE will be demanding UC rectify when we bargain for pay scales.

Special thanks to the hard work of our Optometrist Organizing Committee chair Heidi Miller, and all of the Organizing Committee who organized a supermajority of Optometrists in their successful campaign for Union representation with UPTE! On to bargaining!

Mt. San Jacinto College Part-Time Faculty Bargaining Update

After months of negotiations and mobilizing, Mt. San Jacinto College negotiators have doubled their wage offer from just 2% up to 4%, and agreed to improved extended lab compensation. This is a far cry from UPTE’s demand for 10% but shows that our strategy of mobilizing more and more members to bargaining is working.

Thanks to Chief Bargainer Sandra Blackman and the whole bargaining team on their tireless work!

UCSF CLS Win 6% Equity, UCLA CLS Fight and Win on Safe Staffing!

Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS) across the state have been fighting for safe staffing and working conditions after demand for their skills has skyrocketed because of the pandemic.

After a long fight led by UCSF CLS Unit Representative Doug Chin, UCSF has agreed to a 6% market equity increase for all UCSF CLS on the heels of their recent win for increased night and weekend differentials.

UCLA CLS Unit Representative Julie Zamarripa has won a commitment from UCLA’s Brentwood lab to hire an additional 6 positions, as well as ergonomic improvements at work to reduce injuries. UCLA CLS continue to organize for safe staffing and improved recruitment and retention.

UPTE Convention Update

UPTE’s 30th Convention will take place at the Oakland Airport Hilton from 11am-7pm on July 30th and 9am-3:30pm on July 31st!
